Pierre Rivest
2006

Pilot & consultant

Pierre Rivest began his career in aviation in 1950, flying as a bush and airline pilot for fifteen years. He also co-owned a bush service on Quebec’s North Shore. For the next fifteen years, Rivest went to Transport Canada where he was Inspector in charge of flying schools and flight instructors, Regional Superintendant of Air Regulations, and project manager for the Amendments to the Aeronautics Act. Rivest dedicated most of his career to the improvement of pilot training and proficiency programs. In 1960, he wrote the first Canadian flight training manual in French, entitled «Plein Vol». As written in the foreword: «Even the best student will look somewhat foolish if he is unable to clearly undestand the teacher. To communicate efficiently, language is the basic tool. Therefore to me, francophone pilots in North America, and especially in the province of Quebec, should be able to study in their own language» [our translation]. Rivest also wrote: «Pilote de brousse/Bush pilot», «Manuel de l’instructeur de vol», «Le transport aérien spécial et en régions isolées».

In 1968, he elaborated the flight training program at the Centre québécois de formation aéronautique (CQFA) in Chicoutimi. For the first time in North America, a public school was now offering a flying course at the collegial level. For eight years, he served as Director of the Air Transport Division for the Quebec government. He was also project manager at the International Aviation Management Training Institute (IIFGA). Finally, he operated his own private firm in Longueuil, called «Bureau aéronautique P.R. Enr.». Two trophies were created in his honour: the «Pilote de brousse» Trophy (awarded to a student of the CQFA), and the «Plein Vol» Trophy (renamed in 2006 «Pierre Rivest Trophy»), awarded by the AQTA to a flight school to recognize its program quality. Among the numerous awards received by Mr. Rivest were the FAI Tissandier Diploma, the Transport Canada Air Safety Award and the Queen Elizabeth II medal.
